Factors Influencing the Communication Competence of Nursing Students

Abstract
Purpose : Purpose of this descriptive study is to identify the correlation among self-esteem, types of adult-attachment and communication competence of nursing students and to find the factors that influence the communication competence of nursing students.

Method : Data analysis was done by SPSS/18.0. Date was analyzed in terms of frequency, percentage, meand, grade point average, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe s test and Pearson s correlation coefficients, Stepwise multiple regression.

Results : Self-esteem of subjects and their communicational competence shows intermediate level of positive relationship. Type of adult attachment of the subjects and the communicational competence of them shows weak negative relationship. The most important factor for predicting communicational competence of nursing students is self-esteem. Satisfaction over nursing and types of adult attachment are found as next important factors.

Conclusion : Subjects with high self-esteem, low avoidance and anxiety types, show higher communication competence. In addition, Health condition and satisfaction over nursing also influence the communicational competence.
